Local Feather Painting Makes Journey Of Healing And Love

Feather Helps Cancer Patient With Medical Bills,
Then Is Presented To Alaskan Indian Elder

Member Donie Schmidt is known for her finely detailed paintings of wildlife on feathers. On Saturday, August 6, one of these feathers had made its way to Alaska and was presented by a Black Foot Indian to the Chief of the visiting Bering Sea tribe at a large ceremony. According to Illaya, who presented the gift, the elder "was so thrilled, he cried, and then explained that his totem as a child has been the wolf. He was totally amazed with [Donie's] talent."

This particular feather is very special. It originally made the trip to Washington state as a donation for a raffle to help raise money for medical bills for a man who needed a bone marrow transplant. The publicity generated by the raffle prompted a non-profit group that deals with asbestos cancer to offer to pay all of the man's past, present and future medical bills.
